What’s in the blog?

In this blog you will find unconventional, yet practical tips, advice and strategies for how to do the following:

  • Learn Spanish as an adult
  • Become fluent on your own (without moving to another country)
  • Overcome common obstacles to learning a foreign language

In addition, you’ll find in-depth language learning product reviews and links to the best resources on the internet.

Finally, you’ll meet some of my friends from Colombia, Costa Rica and other Spanish speaking countries that I’ve met on my journey to becoming multilingual.

About Tom

It all started in 2016. I was working as a bartender/server at a local restaurant and turning down requests to move into management.

I’m an introvert and a dreamer (INFP), and so the thought of spending my time filling up ramekins with mayonnaise and resolving customer complaints about being served too much ice in their cocktails left me desperately seeking something a bit more fulfilling.

And with that, I decided to do the only thing that made sense at the time.

I quit my job, sold my car and all of my belongings and moved to Colombia.

I quit my job, sold my car and almost all of my belongings and moved to Colombia.

Nothing like facing all of your fears all in one big, swift move.

Looking back, I could never have predicted the challenges I would face living in Central and South America for nearly three years.

But the biggest surprise of all was the gift that was wrapped up in all of it – A NEW LIFE. For taking the risk, I was rewarded with:

  • A new way of communicating
  • New friends and family
  • New tastes, sounds and movements
  • A slower pace of life
  • And an unpredictably factor that ironically took away nearly all of my anxiety

If you are brave enough to say goodbye, life will reward you with a new hello.

As a United States American and native English speaker, I know it’s tempting to settle for being monolingual. I hope that the content of this blog will inspire you to act otherwise, so that you too can reap the priceless rewards of being a speaker of multiple languages.
